A father determined to help his daughter get Effer-K

I am always happy to help our customers when they experience difficulty getting Effer-K at their pharmacy.  Now that we have built a solid distribution channel – it doesn’t happen often, but occasionally these situations do arise.  Not long ago I was contacted by the father of a customer who was having this problem. I wanted to share this story because I was touched by this father’s determination to help his daughter.

Marie is an Effer-K customer who was born with an intestinal birth defect which requires her to take potassium daily. Marie has taken Effer-K with great success but her pharmacist recently informed her he could no longer get Effer-K from the pharmacy’s supplier. This was devastating news for Marie because she had taken other products in the past and they had caused her severe pain. Effer-K was the only product she was able to take without pain. But what choice did she have? She could no longer get Effer-K, so she was forced to take another product. She feared she was doomed to spend the rest of her life in pain.

Lucky for Marie, her father, Nick, was not willing to accept that his daughter would spend the rest of her life suffering because she could not get Effer-K. Nick did a little research and found my phone number. Nick called Marie with the good news. He had found the manufacturer of Effer-K! While Marie was appreciative of her father’s help, she did not think anything would come of his discovery. She had a picture in her head of a huge “Pharma-Giant bureaucracy” and she did not think Nick would actually be able to talk to a human being. Nick, however, was not deterred by this.

Nick decided to call the number he had found and find out why the pharmacy could no longer get Effer-K from the supplier. When Nick reached me, he explained that the pharmacy told him that Effer-K was on backorder.  I assured him that this was definitely not the case and that I could ship an order that day if needed. After talking to Nick, I contacted the supplier for the pharmacy and they agreed to place an order.

It was that easy. I requested an order, and the supplier placed an order. To me, I was just doing my job, but to Nick who has watched Marie suffer her whole life until she found Effer-K, this was a blessing. Hearing Nick’s excitement upon finding out his daughter would be able to get the medicine she needed made me realize what a considerable impact Effer-K has on the quality of life for so many people. I am grateful for the opportunity to help people like Nick and Marie.

Please read the testimonials submitted by Nick and Marie.

If you need help getting Effer-K at your pharmacy please don’t hesitate to call or email me.

Welcome our new Effer-K distributor – Prescription Supply!

Now that Effer-K has been on the market for a few years – it’s pretty easy for patients to get their Effer-K prescription filled at almost any pharmacy.   We ship pallets of Effer-K out to many pharmaceutical wholesalers each week – including “the big 3,” Cardinal, McKesson and AmerisourceBergen.  These wholesalers supply most of the big pharmacy chains and mail-order drug suppliers in the country.

However, the Big 3 are not the only suppliers around.  There are several smaller wholesalers with different niches who also carry Effer-K.   Recently, we learned of one of these suppliers via a pharmacist who contacted us.  She explained that she would like to order Effer-K, but couldn’t, because it wasn’t available at her distributor, Prescription Supply.

Prescription Supply is a family-owned distributor based out of Toledo, Ohio who prides themselves on excellent customer service and rapid delivery.  When we contacted them about this dilemma,  they were more than happy to help their customer get the Effer-K they needed. They placed an order and now stock a variety of strengths and flavors.

Are you a Prescription Supply customer? Effer-K can be ordered through Prescription Supply by calling 1-800-777-0761.

We are excited for the opportunity to work with Prescription Supply!

Effer-K is NOT on backorder. Effer-K is available in every flavor and strength (mEq) and in most cases we can have an order shipped to your pharmacy within one day of your request. So – if you have any trouble getting Effer-K please contact us.

Effer-K is now listed in eMPR!

At the recent AAFP show in Washington, DC, we met representatives from eMPR and learned more about their company. eMPR is a “prescribing Reference for drug monographs, the latest drug news, drug recalls, drug interactions as well as e-Prescribing.” Many physicians rely on information in eMPR to make daily prescribing decisions. But – unfortunately Effer-K was not listed in their database.

After talking to the staff, and sharing information about our product, they understood the benefits of Effer-K and listed it in their database. See: http://www.empr.com/effer-k/drug/34364/. We hope that this will make it much easier for physicians to get the information they need to write for Effer-K.

Effer-K Exhibits in California and Massachusetts

Effer-K in Anaheim, CA

August has been a busy month for Effer-K appearances.   Lately we have been attending family physician meetings where Effer-K is generally very well received.

In early August, I attended the ACOFP CA convention in Anaheim, CA.  The convention was held at the lovely Disneyland Resort, (the original hotel built by Walt Disney) located at the entrance to Downtown Disney and theme parks.  I met with many wonderful physicians and exhibitors.  Physicians from Kaiser Permanente discussed how Effer-K is available on their formulary.

We gave away a $100 VISA Gift card and the winner was Dr. Chow of Anaheim, CA.  Congratulations Dr. Chow!

Effer-K booth at the Anaheim show
Our new and improved Effer-K graphics debuted on our display at the ROME show.

Later in the month, I exhibited at the 2013 Regional Osteopathic Medical Education Conference (ROME) in Boston, MA.   The conference was held at the Sheraton Boston, in the heart of Back Bay shopping district and just blocks from the Charles River.  This meeting was a terrific opportunity to discuss Effer-K and it’s availability with 115 physicians from CT, MA, RI, and neighboring states.  I had an in-depth conversation with a physician wanting to use Effer-K for her pediatric patient on a Ketogenic diet.  I did inform the doctor that Effer-K does not have an indication for pediatrics.

Congratulations Dr. Kozar, the winner of our  $100 VISA gift card at the ROME show.

Thank you to everyone at both shows who stopped by our booth.

Our next big show will be the American Academy of Family Practice Physicians in San Diego, CA coming up at the end of September. We hope to see you all there.

Effer-K is covered on every state discount drug program

Both patients and practitioners frequently ask about the cost of Effer-K®. Because the pharmacy determines price and insurance coverage varies, consumer cost has been a difficult question to answer.

Now, however, thanks to the state drug card programs, we can provide a more accurate price for Effer-K®. Each state has a discount drug card program that is available to anyone at no cost. All you have to do is go on-line, prove you are a resident of the state and print off your discount drug card. When you bring your state discount drug card to the participating pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS, Kmart and many others), you receive discounts on many medications, Effer-K® being one of them.

The customer service rep for the Alaska drug card offered this explanation regarding how the card works.

“Our card will discount prescription medications that ARE NOT covered by your insurance plan, or if you have no insurance. You have the option at any time to use our card in lieu of your insurance; however, they cannot be used together. If your medication is not covered by your insurance, or for some reason you choose to not use your insurance (i.e. high deductibles, gap periods, etc.) you will tell your pharmacist to run our card as the primary.”

We visited every state drug card program and found the price of a 30 tablet supply of Effer-K® with the discount drug card to be:

Effer-K 10 mEq $15 – $18
Effer-K 20 mEq $18 – $20
Effer-K 25 mEq $8 – $11

In most cases, purchasing a 90 day supply reduced the cost even more.

To learn more about your state discount drug card program, please check out the table we created, summarizing every state program with links to the associated web site.

Effer-K is a great product for the self-dispensing physician.

Are you a self-dispensing physician? If so – consider dispensing Effer-K® 10, 20 and 25 mEq effervescent potassium citrate directly from your office.

Self-dispensing offers tremendous benefits for both your practice and your patients.

Having Effer-K® available in the office ensures that patients get the medication they need, avoiding delays or an additional trip to a pharmacy which improves overall patient satisfaction.

Self-dispensing also improves patient compliance. When patients are able to get their medications at their physicians’ offices, “the compliance rate…[improves] by more than 60%.”1

Self-dispensing medication also increases office productivity and revenue, as pharmacy collaboration is not required.  Offices will earn revenue from retailing Effer-K® while still offering patients a better price than what they would pay at the pharmacy.

Self-dispensing Effer-K® does not require stocking large quantities of product. Each dosage of Effer-K® is packaged with 12 cartons per case that include 30 individually wrapped, foil tablets per carton. Case prices range from $75 – $144.  All products are manufactured and distributed in St. Louis, Missouri and will be shipped via UPS.   For any questions about Effer-K® including issues regarding self-dispensing, please contact us.

Effer-K Exhibits at the Illinois Osteopathic Society’s Annual Winter Scientific Seminar

effer-k showLast weekend, Effer-K sales rep, Kimberly, exhibited at the Illinois Osteopathic Medical Society’s Annual Winter Scientific Seminar in Lombard, Illinois. She received a lot of interest in Effer-K, bringing back several Effer-K sample requests from physicians she met at the conference.

One interaction in particular holds a lot of promise for getting greater distribution of Effer-K within the state of Illinos. Kimberly relayed…

I was approached by a physician that is the Director of E.R. at an Illinois hospital. He was thrilled to learn about Effer-K and start using it. He explained that in the emergency room setting, there is a great need to quickly increase patient’s potassium. Tablets will often not do that.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth at this meeting. If you were not able to see us in Lombard this past weekend and are a patient or physician who would like to try Effer-K, please request samples via our web site: http://www.efferk.com
