Effer-K®, effervescent potassium citrate for potassium repletion, is NOT an expensive new drug.

Last week we received a call from a nurse who was requesting more Effer-K® samples for one of her patients. The patient was heading down to Florida for a few months and wanted to have plenty of Effer-K® to take on her trip.

I told the nurse that we are always happy to mail samples of Effer-K® to physicians’ offices, but in the case of this patient – why didn’t the doctor just write her a script? This would allow her to pick up her Effer-K® at any pharmacy in Florida. The nurse responded that they did not think the patient could afford Effer-K® so they had just been giving her all the samples.

Effer-K® is not expensive. We are asked frequently about the cost of Effer-K®, so we have actually called pharmacies and found that the average cash price to be between $17 – $22 for 30 effervescent 10 or 20 mEq tablets. In some cases this was less expensive than KCl tablets and capsules in the equivalent strengths.
